Most people overbuy capacity on flash drives specifically because per-GB pricing looks like a bargain at higher tiers — but flash drives are a poor primary backup medium regardless of size (see below). Buy for your actual transfer use case, not as a backup strategy.
What to avoid
- Unbranded "1TB" or "2TB" drives at suspiciously low prices A large share of ultra-cheap high-capacity flash drives sold on marketplaces are firmware-hacked to report false capacity; they silently corrupt data once you exceed their real capacity.
- Using a flash drive as your only backup Flash memory degrades with write cycles and has no redundancy. Treat it as a transfer tool, not a backup plan.
- No-name USB 2.0 drives at USB 3.x prices Always check the actual interface version, not just the port shape.
